I was not referring to teaching Chinese, but to some Western companies looking to do business in China who are desperate for people who are fluent (read, write, speak). It may have been Forbes or McKinsey where I saw this information can't remember now.

Still sounds like gap year/mickey mouse work to me. Are they going to offer inflation linked pension back in the UK? Full medical insurance? Salary paid in real money (EUR/USD/GBP)?

My friend who works in Lima for an international school gets all of the above as part of his package, and that is just working as a humble english teacher.

If chinese/western companies/multinationals want westerners who are fully fluent in Chinese to live and work in China then conditions have to adapt accordingly and follow the example of HK (although the wonderful expat packages of the past are long gone there now), or perhaps adopt the western package entirely.

Cheers and beers
