You don't see it on such a massive scale like in China. This is a country that purports itself to harbor a respectful attitude towards older people, and yet the biggest demographics of folks who seem to make a living trying to just survive are old folks who are always scrummaging around in garbage bins trying to find bottles and such. It seems like their sons/daughters are too busy elsewhere with their own affairs to take care of their parents. That, or maybe the old folks just were not good caretakers and are unwanted by their own children.

The person whom you responded to is a typically ignorant "equalizer" type of person who tries to put something inferior on equal plane with something superior just because situations that happen everywhere happen, well everywhere. There are places where things occur MORE, and places where they occur LESS. If both places in comparison were THE SAME, there would be no point in having an argument. But to say that "the west" has it "too" shows in fact that this person believes the west to be actually inferior in some way. Of course, they are too afraid to say this outright for fear of getting their bubbles burst and getting exposed as the insignificant individuals who can't think critically that they are. In other words pretend teachers or "Deechers" as Turnoi calls them fit this category quite well.
