One common thing found in many countries in the Orient is the lack of respect for the individual. An individual who grows up in an Asian country stands a worse chance of seeing himself/herself as being valuable if they were left alone. Their existence disproportionately depends on the approval of outside sources. While all of us are social creatures, generally speaking western folks are better at being with themselves. That is why you hear about "boundaries" and "personal space" used in the West. One good analogy that I have heard is that Westerners are like Trees. We generally can stand tall and be okay alone. While Asians are more like Vines. Being dependent on others and crossing boundaries in a way that can be described as "all up in another person's business" from the eyes of a Westerner.
