My girlfriend would just point out that she has a phone and no need for a watch. She tends to splurge on things like Gucci sunglasses and nice handbags, but I never pay a penny towards them. She wouldn't trust my awful taste in fashion anyway.

That is also why gifts tend to be cheap; apart from certain cosmetic products from the duty free occasionally. If I blew a lot of money on her, she'd actually call me an idiot for wasting money that I needn't spend.
