I can assure that the money I have earned in my working life, and my savings, has been earned "ethically and honestly" and is there to spend as I see fit.

I didn't read anything in his post to suggest you had earned the money in a dishonest fashion. It read to me like he was agreeing with your right to live in an apartment and spend your money as you like. I still maintain that as a lecturer for 20 years in the UK, and with the current lifestyle it gives you in a developing country now, you owe it to the UK to go and use your education/talents there, and not aiding a country that aims to bring down western countries.
