I am reminded of British criticism of the U.S. during it's climb to global prominence during my youth. Certainly the decades of U.S. militarism and social inequality were worthy of disparagement. But am I wrong to believe that there is a latent colonialism in the feverish diligence with which the Queen's subjects subject contemporary world powers to jealous scrutiny now that the sun has long set on their own empire.
