Thank you for an interesting and substantive response.
Imagine: mildly ignorant, adequately ignorant, 30% ignorant.
'Wholly, totally, entirely' are often used to modify 'ignorant', but to what distinction?
He is ignorant of Egyptian history. He is entirely ignorant of Egyptian history.
Stylistic emphasis is not incorrect, but when it is used without substantive meaning attached to a word that denigrates the intellectual ability of others, I consider it comical.
