Re "only Oral teaching"

Up to a point, but how important is it? When we get into a car, start the engine and press the 'Go' pedal, do we really need to know what is going on inside the engine?

Why isn't 'bomb' pronounced the same as 'womb' and 'tomb'? Do we really need to know why? Do most people really care? (Unless, of course, we have a direct interest in historical orthography)
