Re A warning re the new work permit system

Just so everyone knows - this is not a new thing at all.

It is possible to get the original employers to cancel the work visa HOWEVER for whatever reasons they almost never cooperate. Basically you have to wait the year out before applying for the next work visa.

Not new, this was happening at least 4 years ago in my experience and I'd already heard that a dozen times from other expats who'd been here longer.

Chinese powers truly are the technological terrorists.

Edward Snowden would chuckle. The U.S. and the U.S.S.R. make China look like upskirters.
And good luck trying to pee outside in London without your willy being memorialized.

Chinese powers truly are the technological terrorists. Their authoritarian system allows no reasoning but bowing.

Re A warning re the new work permit system

This is not unusual. They essentially see you as having said 'F*ck You!' to the school, so now they are essentially 'f*cking' you back!

If it's causing you a problem, you could write to the local FEB (Foreign Expert's Bureau) and explain your case.

Until that permit is either cancelled, or expires, you will struggle to get another one. Schools use this tactic on people who renegue on their contract, quit before their contract expires, run away, etc etc. Contracts in China are only really enforceable when SCHOOLS want to enforce them and they will often, if not ALWAYS, try and screw you in the small print somewhere.

Either way, you've made your message crystal clear. Don't renegue on a contract once a work permit has been issued.

A warning re the new work permit system

Let my current sorry tale be a warning for teachers regarding the new online work permit system.

Back in September I applied to teach in China and a work permit was issued. I changed my mind about the vacancy for various reasons and did not apply for a visa.

I applied for and accepted a new job in China a week ago. However, they try to apply for a work permit using the new online system...and told me they could not, because a permit had been issued by another province. This means I cannot get a new post in China. The previous university is refusing to cancel the old permit.

Thus the warning now is clear. Do not sign any contract unless you are willing to do the job. Or you will end up like me: jobless and unable to do anything about it. The new system allows for your actions to be tracked. Even if you commit no criminal offense you are stuck. The university can take revenge on you for not fulfilling the contract even if you do not actually start the job.

And yes, I wish I had taken the job now...but they will not even talk to me.
