Wise Choices - Teachers Discussion

Garth:

My husband and I have been teaching in China for the past three years. Our first year of teaching with no experience we made 5000 rmb, the second year 6000 rmb and this year 7500 rmb. We have no expenses where we live in China, everything is paid for. We are also provided three meals a day. Our airflight is also paid. Each year we have been able to save around $5000.00 cdn.

My husband is teaching oral english and I am teaching science. We teach 24 classes, 40 minutes, a week Monday to Friday.

Teaching ESL overseas - Teachers Discussion

In the interest of WISE CHOICES

I am currently giving serious consideration to going overseas to teach ESL. I have my BA, including TESOL certificate, and I even believe given my nature, etc I would be successful. The thing is, I am nearing retirement age and need to focus on maximizing my earnings where possible.

According to my research, I am finding that teacher earnings, in particular China appear somewhat low, i.e. 4500-5000/month. Is this not $571-634/mth. US currency?

All responses in this regard will be appreciated.

Thank you, Gareth
