Re: Teaching English in China - Teachers Discussion

Hello, it is obvoius that there are many things to beware of when pursuing a job in China. Thank-you to all of those with helpful information. I am thinking about spending 6 months to a year teaching in China. I have been told by some that you do not need a bachelor's degree (just the tefl), and by others that you do need a bachelor's degree. I would be very appreciative to anyone with an answer for me. Thank-you!

Hey, I'm still here myself and loving it. I have a great job in China.

But it hasn't always been the case.

Living and working in China can indeed be great. But you do have to be very, very careful. I would suggest treating a new school as you would a strange snake: assume it is poisonous until you're absolutely sure it isn't.
Being too trusting is MUCH more likely to cause you grief in a Chinese school than being slightly paranoid is likely to do...

I'd also be extra careful of recruiters, who can pop up in all sorts of guises and places.

Re: Teaching English in China - Teachers Discussion

Hi Lyn,
Yes, all true, but a little too negative for my experience. I spent more than three years teaching in China and will definitely go back. The positives certainly outweigh the negatives in my view. Most of my time there was at one very big public school so maybe I just got lucky, although I taught at summer camps with teachers from other parts of the country and most were happy. Love to hear from you if you want to email me. I have lots of info, both positive and negative, photos, etc that might help you.
