Re: Native Speakers vs. Non Native Speakers

I have been teaching in China for 3 years and yet we can't avoid RACISM in terms of hiring Foreign Teachers.I used to work in one of the biggest city in China during my first year and unfortunately I had the difficulty of looking for School the fact that their priorities are NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS.Well, after a long wait I found a good school who accepted me not because of the Country where I came from but because I have shown my skills, techniques and good teaching strategies associated with hard work and patience to my students. This is already my 2nd year contract to my School. It was really challenging on my part the fact that I had a co-teacher ,a NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER and of course his salary is higher than what I received every month.I thought he was good enough to be a teacher but I was astonished to discover that he wasn't good in teaching strategies. He simply go to the classroom talking something about his country, his experiences and so on.Though it's true he is perfect in speaking but he lacks knowledge and skills of teaching English .I am not surprised to know that he wasn't a TEACHER but indeed a driver. That's why even though I am not a native English speaker I am still proud of myself because I am doing my best as a professional TEACHER.Giving our best is simply the key to prove our efficiency as a teacher regardless of race.GOOD LUCK to all!!

Re: Native Speakers vs. Non Native Speakers

Any non-native speakers of English out there as well as native speakers of English who are not white need not be despondent re obtaining posts in China as FT's.That's because there are opportunities available for such job seekers in less developed parts of the country,of which there are still many.
I have had personal experience of working in one such area, where many of my fellow FT's were non-whites or non-native speakers of English having no Western university degrees, lack of which was no problem as the employer was able to arrange F visas for them locally.I'm not going to mention said employer explicitly here as I know that his critics,of which I am not one, will quickly denigrate his company once again. But if you wish to apply there, you can discover where to apply by first googling the ESL Teachers Board for Mr River.
Two other things worth mentioning, you'll be expected to give a successful demo before being hired, but if you're worth your salt as an educator, you've nothing to fear on that basis. And,depending on where you're placed, you may be subject to a curfew,eg you must be in your accommodation by 11:00 pm each night.

Native Speakers vs. Non Native Speakers

Pure White.... Pure Black.... Pure Yellow is boring why not try other skin colors for variety. It seems so annoying that racism is very evident in this field... to see most of the advertisement looking for NATIVE SPEAKERS ONLY. You are looking for teachers ESL teachers who could help non-english speaking countries to speak, listen, write and read the English Language. You are not looking for fashion models or something. The color and place where they came from should not be your sole basis in getting your ESL Teachers. That's why many instances that the school and the recruiter got a problem because the native speakers they've got is really a native speakers has TOFEL CELTA etc. which can be instantly acquired thru the net. The bare thruth is they are not really a real teachers not even know how to handle classes nor not even know the teaching strategies and methodology. That's why many problems occur that they cant understand the individual differences.I am not generalizing my conceptions okay. I've been here for almost three years and that advertisement doesn't affect me at all because I know for my self my capabilities and my abilities as a NON NATIVE Speaker. Many instances that I went for a demonstration together with other NATIVE SPEAKERS but not a single chance that I was not accepted . I wrote this to inspire other NON NATIVE SPEAKERS who are really a real teacher to go on and compete the RACISM here. This is our battle. I wrote this but it does not mean I am against NATIVE SPEAKERS but that is the stark reality. I have many native speaker friends and they understand me. For the recruiter and school to give chance to the non native speaker. I know they are good... be given a chance. And base your recruitment and hiring not only in their COLORS.. not only WHERE THEY COME FROM... but merely base it on the qualifications, experience related to the position. INTERVIEWS so that you will have a chance to assess the fluency of the applicant and give them demonstrations class to assess totally the quality of the applicant. In that case very seldom you will encounter problems.

WHITE...BLACK....YELLOW is boring try other colors.
