Re: Annoying things at Chinese universities and schools.

Aside the substandard housing or in house equipment, what annoys me is the recruiting of students and placing them into the courses available. Haven't you guys seen classrooms full of youngsters that do not want the offered subjects?

Cheers and beers

Anytime that I am given sub-standard piece of equipment that involves electrical power in China, I get a power cord, and then set the item in question in the shower and turn on the water. After the water is running, and I am at a safe distance, I plug in the power cord so the electric goes into the appliance, fan, microwave, etc. I also make sure that the circuit breaker is locked out with duct tape so that the switch stays open as the TV, microwave, or other item cooks nicely. After I am completely satisfied with the successful electrocution of the condemned appliance and finding no pulse, I disengage the power, and then remove and dry off the item in question. After the smell from the electrical fire is removed via the bathroom exhaust fan, assuming there is one, I call for house keeping staff or repair people to come check out the item and normally they replace it since they can see that there is clearly a problem with the item.

It really annoys me when the washing machine in your apartment does not work, the toilets are blocked, the shower tray is
cracked, the air-con/heater does not work, and these problems take ages to be rectified, but every day there is someone mopping the floors and cleaning windows. Typical of the Chinese! Focus on the things that don't matter,
ignore the things that are important!

Precisely why approximately 50 percent of westerners working in China cannot bear it for any length of time! Remember that you have chosen to immerse yourself in a totally different culture, and things don't change here overnight, even though there is rapid development these days. You may find after you've been here a long time you'll get less annoyed. But whether that's a good thing or not is a different matter entirely!
