Degree certificate, not degree diploma, is the correct terminology. A college diploma is an inferior qualification to a university degree. I think those of us who have a Bachelor's degree should use the correct terminology to describe the document that proves our achievement in obtaining said academic qualification!
Anyway, your new employer in China is being co-operative with you regarding your problem re having no degree certificate - that's the main thing. I'm sorry if I came across a bit terse, but I think you can understand why. Now, I'll be accused of being an academic snob by other posters, no doubt. I'll not care about it, just like water off a duck's back, as far as I'm concerned.

What are you talking about Old Timer? It seems you are trying to attack me for no reason.

I got a degree in sociology. I know I owe money and it is my responsibility to pay (but I do not have much money), but how will it impact me as I move forward? The UNI I graduated from is willing to meet me halfway until I pay my debts. But I can not get my diploma for my BA degree at this point.

Just keep matters civil please. Maybe I mis-worded things a little, which is maybe what OT is getting at, so what.

Why not stand up to your commitments? Why should the school give you ANYTHING if you've not paid your debt? You haven't paid the money, so why should you get the receipt (diploma)?

So, I graduated in May of 2008 with a BA. But because I owe the school money, which I still have not been able to pay back, they will NOT give me my diploma.

And they NEVER will give you your BA diploma, coz there's no such thing! A guy who graduated with a BA, supposedly, who doesn't know what he has studied for, a BA degree, not a BA diploma - you're a laugh a minute, pal! And since you have studied successfully for a BA degree you should be able to work out what to do yourself.

I graduated UNI, but owe money, so they have not given me my diploma, what should I do for jobs?

So, I graduated in May of 2008 with a BA. But because I owe the school money, which I still have not been able to pay back, they will NOT give me my diploma. So now, I have little tangible evidence that I did graduate, even though I did. I have an unofficial transcript from the end of my last semester. All the grades from every class I have ever taken are on the paper, along with my final GPA (2.95), including the total credits, 120 (which is what is needed to finish UNI).

I asked the UNI what I could do about this, because I want to look for a new job in China and need my diploma as proof of graduation. They told me they would send me a verification letter of graduation, with the UNI stamp, address and phone number. They also said prospective employers could simply call the school to verify that I graduated. But would most Chinese schools go through the trouble of doing this? Is one phone call half way around the world worth their time? Or will these accept this verification letter with stamp, and an unofficial transcript from my last semester?

The scary thing is, I took a look at the "diploma" on record at my current school. It is a fake, from a UNI in a state I have never even been! I even told the school the degree was wrong. They did not care. I guess the recruiter made this diploma. I really hope the recruiters actions will not hurt me in the future.

Should I explain to future schools my dilemma? Or just give them the unofficial diploma, (hopefully) the verification letter (if i get it soon) and contact info to the UNI? I guess this is an unusual situation.
