unless they have become fluent in the language. I predict that being able to use Mandarin confidently will be an asset.

Are you referring to teaching Mandarin? Or acting as a translator or go between? Because I can tell you, in Spain, at least, only chinese nationals get the jobs teaching chinese...

Sure most foreigners gain reasonable fluency in Mandarin after a few years in China, but how many can read and write it well?
