What I do know is that there has been a clampdown on what have been termed 'bogus marriages' ,where unscrupulous agents are helping immigrants to obtain entry to the UK. Now I am not suggesting that the Brit you heard about is in the category.

Interesting points. I guess as long as the wife has proof of her own funds, the marriage certificate and your story checks out, all should be ok.
