I usually give 100 or 200rmb. 1000rmb is a lot of money for most Chinese.
We are better off spending the money on ourselves.

It is never appreciated either, I gave a few hundred rmb recently at chinese new year without so much as a word of thanks received.

It's better to spend the money on beer and hookers imho!
