Re: preparing for the CAE

Sounds like an interesting student. I guess he has spent a part of his life living in an English speaking country hence the implicit knowledge of English without the explicit knowledge.

You are probably best looking at the books that Cambridge publish themselves or at least the list of books from well known publishing houses that they also list on their website.

If it is just the 'Use of English' section you are worried about then you can download some example exam papers. A lot of the books on that list are in essence just a big mock exam, however you can also download past papers from the Cambridge site and other places on the internet for free.

You might also consider a standard grammar book like Swan - Praticial English Usage. It's fairly easy to digest in comparison to some other grammar books

preparing for the CAE

Hi, For the first time I have a student preparing for the CAE. Actually he is an extremely high level English speaker. However he has had no schooling in English. He knows nothing about grammar terms or why he speaks correctly. So some of the questions on the test he will fail. He really wants to get a grammar book to study and practice his English. He would like to know which one to get. I have no idea. I am so new to this, and he is right, every web page says they have the best book. If I don't personally read them all I can not tell him. I was wondering if any of you who have been doing this longer than I, might have some insight.

Thanks for your time.

Kimber
