Re: On grammar

I read the article in the Guardian a few days ago. I'm inclined to agree with the idea that language is owned by all and that it is subject to change by the people using it rather than by a supposed set of rules such as grammar.

It fits nicely with a report published by the University of Reading a couple of years ago in which they claim to be able to identify how the English language will change in coming years. I'm not sure how accurate their model will ever be because i feel that with English becoming established as a lingua franca in the 21st Century the number of variables that would need to be considered to be able to accurately map it's transition would be too complex. However, what it does demonstrate through its historical work is that language is a tool for communication and that individuals will adapt and change that tool to suit their basic need to communicate rather than follow abstract and rather high level ideas of grammar.

This is the BBC report about the study at Reading Uni
