It would have been interesting to hear what the aforementioned police chief (Wang Lijun) had to say on the matter. A lot of news sources are reporting that his initial plan was to defect to the UK but he changed his mind at the last minute and went to the US embassy. I doubt we'd have given him a different answer than the Yanks did but it would be you never know.

I can't imagine we'll be hearing much more from him in the near future now that he's in the hands of the security forces
