Re: Robbery at a middle school in Sichuan

This is obviously a terrible thing to happen to an individual and i hope that the school and police can help the OP.

However, i think in general China is a pretty safe destination when compared to other options around the world. I've worked in Africa & Russia and experienced some pretty scary and intimidating situations but i still feel safer walking down a street in China than i do in the UK.

The one problem i have (and probably many others have as well) suffered from is bike theft. I've even had crappy third hand rust covered pieces of junk stolen. It seems if it has two wheels and is peddle powered it becomes irresitible to any passing thief.

It's stuff like this that makes people lose confidence with staying in China. With all that money being spent on new, pretty police cars and expensive uniforms you would expect the police to make a better effort at doing their jobs, not practicing xenophobia. People need to tell others that looking pretty and actually thinking nice don't always go together, treat others like how you want to be treated as the old saying goes.

I doubt that you will be paid by the scholl for your losses. in such cases, they all have so many "nice" excuses why they cannot pay you

I would agree with you here Turnoi.

I knew a guy from Nigeria who got robbed, and the teacher more or less told him (and us!) it was OUR fault for staying in a insecure hotel that we were placed in by THEM for said winter camp.

When the police did come, they seemed more concerned about checking his work visa, rather than recovering stolen items.

Afraid you may have to replace by yourself, sad as it is.
