As for Cantonese, perhaps, it's closer to Vietnamese where China has ruled ones before.

I would agree, I consider the southerners like Northern Viets in appearance and language, even their food, claypot rice is a vietnamese classic, lol.

Your views are reasonable but don't forget that Mao has simplified characters of Putonghua not Cantonese. As for Cantonese, perhaps, it's closer to Vietnamese where China has ruled ones before.
