In the classroom, I agree with you. But most of the posts here are about what foreigners like to wear outside the class.
As to conservative, I am sure you have seen what Chinese women wear whether its cold or hot. Actually I should say how little Chinese
women wear. I come from California, and I thought I had seen it all. But even the clothes of Chinese women make me blush.
AS to overly pushy, at my last school they asked me not to wear my baseball hat. Mind you this was outside the class and I used it to shield my eyes from the sun, not to look cool. A baseball hat, I am sure, is not a sign of crass dress.

Certificated teachers are not backpackers but professionals, and should dress accordingly. Besides, many Chinese people are conservative by nature. So, they do not wish to see foreign teachers in shorts and sandals! As a guest in their country, you should embrace their culture. If you are not willing to do so, you should leave and find a country whose culture you are more at ease with.
