Re: Fed up with international schools?

For the Concordia Itl. School I found this:

http://www.expatexchange.com/rspnet.cfm?add=ok&rid=62&answerid=24143&networkid=31&start=24143

It doesn't give a lot but at least there is some small info.

As for Shanghai United International School well....This board does have some things to say such as this:

http://www.eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/review/index.pl?read=26632

and this:

http://www.eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/review/index.pl?read=42653

and this...

http://www.eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/review/index.pl?read=32338

As well as the whole thread of "great" comments on how this "school" rips people off.

Dulwich had this:

http://www.internationalschoolsreview.com/international-schools/dulwich-college.htm

and this: http://www.expatexchange.com/rspnet.cfm?rid=62&answerid=16123&networkid=31&start=16123

British International School yielded a bit more promise as this came up:

http://top.at0086.com/International-Schools/Best-10-International-Schools-in-China.html

and this information page: http://www.english-schools.org/china/british-international-school-shanghai.htm

If you absolutely had to pick one, from the preliminary research I would go for the 4th one. But all in all a better option would be to send your kids back home. Most if not all "International Schools" still have MONEY as their bottom line, not quality of education. Hope this helps.

Re: Fed up with international schools?

My husband has a good job here, and we are talking. But, I listed some schools in previous post:
Concordia International School
Shanghai United International School
Dulwich College
Bristish International School

Cannot find anything, except a beautiful and glossy website with happy faces and possible 'hot air':(

Re: Fed up with international schools?

I have children to enroll next year ( thank goodness) but should I just convice my husband to go back home where the children are safe?

Yes...that would be a very good idea. The quality of education that your children would receive in a western country should be leaps and bounds better than that of places in Asia. As for contracts not being abided by I can assure you that the crappy outfits in Asia would not be better than that of Eastern Europe. I have not heard of Eastern European outfits murdering expat teachers for ratting on shady business practices, nor have I heard of passports of foreign teachers being wrongfully used by their Eastern European employers to import cars. Both have happened in China.

Fed up with international schools?

Is it me, but whether in language mill, university or international school, most of these places seem to be the pits?

Personally, from my experience, turn-overs are high and moral low. Contracts, especially in the Eastern Europe are unbalanced, favouring the employer and employee with less or no recourse.
In the past, I have felt that I have been owned by the school, leaving in constant angst and insecurity. Bosses who give me no transparency and make threats either an in implicit or explicit way.Schools are business and far from the altruistic persona on the glossy websites at these so called "International Schools"

I used to dread going to work each day not knowing what is ahead of me.

Has anyone else felt this way before?

Sorry for being so negative!! I have children to enroll next year ( thank goodness) but should I just convice my husband to go back home where the children are safe?
