Re: From a Language Expert's Desk

Wise words indeed dear boy.

As for my degree young fellow me lad, it was printed at the headquarters in warrington, they kindly gave me access to their wireless internets like, and I managed to save a degree picture I found online, I printed that one off. Then after I had a good sleep in bangkok off of soi sukhumvit the next day I went to cow san road and they printed me up my own degree. I then flew to hong cong directly from bangcock.

I has never looked back to dreary old collyhurst since like, although I do miss a few jars at the labour club with the lads on a friday like.

Hope thee is well with thy young wife, has silverboy found his true love yet in't orient?

Blimey, great minds think alike, I also printed my own degree in Devonshire- then my learning centre in China printed me out some more qualifications- then I got some more like you in Thailand.

Silverboy? Oh, I want to persuade him to change his dating tactics a bit... all this aggression and refusing to cough up for the noodles is no way to win a fair lady's heart.

Tell you what, with all that software and expertise Turnoi has; if we talk to him sweetly, do you think he'll make us a couple of masters?

Agreed. If you are an average everyday FT in China, and are hellbent on using MS windows, at least use a genuine english version, with a decent firewall software and updateable anti virus software and malwarebytes or spybot search and destroy. The great advantage of linux is, you don't need to worry about any of that crap from the get go, firewall and security is paramount from the first install, you can install and just sit back and get to work.

Well said, Collyhurst Sewer Worker Retired. Of course you can get free software for Windows, but it comes with a price; it's all the baggage which comes with it; and even if you know how to get shot of the unwanted software in the normal way using 'remove a programme' you had better know how to deal with the stuff that evades that tool and of course how to reset your browser page- Windows is a nightmare. I do always carry XP on a stick because it is very good for formatting and reformatting- now I know tis a different format than Linux, but oddly enough if your machine is refusing to even install Ubuntu, it will always do so after reformatting with XP. i know it doesn't appear to make a lot of sense. By the way, what free software did you use to make your degree...I seem to have lost the means? Maybe other posters will know.

Well, I know there are cross-platform applications like Open Office or Libre Office. But they do not have the features that I am in need of - as I said, I have some expensive software like
Key 5.x and estroke 2.x. They are windows-based and exactly what I need when working with Chinese texts; many renowned publishers providing books on Chinese language make use of them as well.

Fair enough, you do have special needs and whereas you could find alternative ways of doing it all on Linux, it would probably take you a couple of years of hard work with no time at all for anything else to achieve it. But for most FT's Linux would be better and safer than Windows. For normal use I cannot for the life of me understand why FT's use fake Chinese Windows when they could use genuine legal free Linux. i hereby give you special dispensation to carry on using Windows- go in peace and sin some more hahaha.
