For university, I can see schools asking for masters degrees. If the Chinese want their schools not to be taken lightly, they need to increase their standards. My brother is the dean of recruiting at a university in California. He can tell you first hand all that is wrong with higher education here with the students he gets.
As to the teacher not getting her renewal, I do not feel sorry for her. She lied to get her job, and that lie caught up to her. If she was upfront with not having a degree, and then her r.p. was denied, I would have some sympathy.

You don't need a degree to teach Oral English
The way things are going you will need a masters degree perhaps sooner than later. 1 FT I knew was refused her work visa on the grounds her degree was bogus, fake, not kosher, call it what you will. The upcoming july 1st crackdown will change things for sure.

Second, you seem to imply that Oral English teachers do not deserve better than being treated in a shabby and disgusting way by recruiters, TC operators, etc. You say Oral English teachers go by recruiters to find their job or even have to go by them because of their "low" status, and you seem to have no problem in talking about fake degrees all the time.
I didn't say any of that apart from the fake degree bit. You don't need a degree to teach Oral English- you should need to be a native-born speaker though. If you can't deal with recruiters you shouldn't be involving yourself in the cut and thrust of living and working in China. It's up to the FT whether or not he allows recruiters to treat him/her shabbily. Those not up to it should go to the wall.
