Re Laowai: New migrants in Super Rich China

What? Both characters in the show wore masks to protect their civilian identities! As a matter of fact, most superheroes do so to this day. Another popular show at that time was "Batman". The characters in that show both wore masks as well. Sorry, no racism shown there.

Asians Denied

Green Hornet, 1966–1967 TV show with Bruce Lee as Kato wearing a mask that covered his face
to hide his Asian face details

The TV show, Kung Fu was started as an idea by Bruce Lee, someone stole that idea and made it into a popular show Kung Fu starring David Carradine.

The first impression that many Westerners have of China in the 60's, 70's & 80's was the
Chinese character in the cowboy tv show Bonanza

Sure, Pearl S. Buck, Matteo Ricco, and Owen Lattimore were also a bunch of western losers. Damn, how did they learn Chinese?

Don't underestimate the West.

Apart for tourist, China as a country never have interaction with bright and intelligent Westerners. English teachers in China and Asia are mainly young people and adventures, some rejectees and some with no much to lose.
