No wonder then the Brits at that time did not want to maintain a "rump colony" of Kowloon and HK Island. Sharing the airport with the Chinese would not have really worked out either, shared sovereignty never worked with the Spanish over gibraltar and that's a fellow EC/EU country. Sheer folly for thatcher to think we could have shared the control over HK. China cuts off the water, that would have meant further expense to the UK to keep the place, and the electricity problem also, although I do believe a lot is generated on lamma island, you can see the big 3 stacks when you take the ferry from/to macau.
