Teaching is NOT a career. Teaching is a service to others for them to have a real-paying and decent career.
Be flexible. Be flexible. Be flexible. Listen to that line is more annoying than hearing a mosquito buzzing.
Re Yes, teachers are underpaid everywhere.
In Asia the name of the game for teachers is to bring many students to their classes. Nobody gives a f.... if the students are learning or not. The same more and more in the West. Many teachers in the West are making big bucks (bonuses) by collectively with the other teachers of the school keep increasing the number of students. Bonuses for high students grades and rare and almost gone.
Network administrators with less than one year of training make 10k more to start and don't have to worry about appearances; clothes, cars, house. Also, rookie cops and firefighter make more $ to start and after. Even construction workers and taxi driver make more $. Teachers in North America have the #1 place taking stress leaves. The career seems more and more like a temporary gig to jump later to better things and making more $ and having less stress.
Learning is: continual, effortless, inconspicuous, boundless, unpremeditated, independent of rewards and punishment, based on self-image, vicarious, never forgotten, inhibited by testing, a social activity, growth - Frank Smith. A good teacher is a facilitating exemplar of lifetime learning.
Re What makes a good English teacher?
Someone who can produce results = attract many students to his classes.
Dedication, passion, professionalism, good manners, never sick... are all secondary.
Back In The West: Some teachers are well-paid while others get paid too low. Teachers don't have nice houses or apartments. Most teachers work for a passion and they don't get enough pay.
