In the offline world, some employers insert clauses but in this case, it's the internet, ffs.
That's not a question of ethics, I guess. There is nothing you owe your previous employer. You should continue with the student on your own if he or she asks for it.

Hi all, I have a question concerning a type of ethical situation. Here's a hypothetical situation:
You currently teach ESL classes online as a freelancer however, you also have a few students that you received under contract from an online ESL institute. The students from the institute are contracted with the school for a 10 week period. At the end of that contract with the school, a student contacts you to continue with lessons, but directly, not through the school. So... do you accept or do you refer them back to the school to renew their contract?
