Chomsky was well know in the field of linguistics. Whether it was in Applied Linguistics or not is irrelevant.

When many people think about linguistics they think of Chomsky whether you like it or not.

All I've ever mostly said about him is that his works appear to be very old fashioned and out of date nowadays.

The fact is that nobody on here can really claim to have any degree unless they display it ( including the transcripts ) I don't expect anyone to do that.
