Peter, I have read Anne's posts. Where do you get the idea that she hates Africans? She wants GOOD teachers wherever they come from. My wife is in the same situation as a Chinese studying English for many years - and she has learned so well she has been hired to teach in South Korea. Anne seems to me to be one of the long line of good Chinese students like my wife and like many of the students I have taught in my two-plus years of teaching in China. Anne does not hate Africans, but she was right to feel very disappointed in the teacher that did not do his job effectively. I think you are overreacting to Anne's criticism - there is no indication that she hates Africans and such an accusation is unwarranted.

Hi Anne,

Nice reading from u. I must also say here that because you hate Africans from the first place, that is why you are saying all that. Do you believe that those you call qualified are also being fired from their various jobs because of pronunciations?

Anyway, thank you and I just wanna tell you that my teachers are doing great job around China and are appreciated by the Chinese students and Chinese teachers.

Thanks

One thing for sure, the word discrimination doesn't exist in our University. Two of our former British teachers were "Black", and they told us that they were migrants from Nigeria. The other teacher from Singapore is a Chinese and one of the Canadian is an Indian. So I don't believe that our University has ever discriminated Blacks or non-native speakers.

It's a case of "One bad apple spoils the whole bunch".

The problem with our former Cameroonian teacher is that he is simply lazy. On many occasions he would simply come into the classroom and declare it a free lesson, meaning we do what we want. He always comes in late sometimes up to 20 minutes and on a few occasions he did not even show up. The only time that he was punctual was his first lesson.

Im not saying that all schools in China are good, some are bloodsuckers and some will go all the way to milk even the very last fen that we poor miserable students have in our pocket

I've been reading threads about foreign teachers complaining about living conditions and things like that, but what about we students, where or who do we go to to air our grievances when we get crappy teachers like him.

How much do you really know about China, its system and most of all, we poor students? Put yourself in our shoes and I'm sure you will be pulling your hairs out.

Our parents toils from the first to the last light 365 days a year to see us through our education and you expect us to pay a huge sum of school fees to get crappy foreign teachers like him.

Well I proud to say that our all our foreign teachers, except for the Cameroonian, have taught us well.

I won't correct your English because you have specifically asked me not to, but I don't understand why a person objects to having their English corrected in an ESL forum. When I go to a doctor, I do expect him/her to help me. Maybe, the analogy has some flaws in it, but I feel this is a similar situation. Just my idea, of course.

Alan. You made a good point. What do you think about people here correcting English to none-speakers who are just making a point? It sounds like if you are in Canada and go to a fast-food place to a buy anything and the cashier perfectly understands what you want, but has to lecture you of the correct English cuz after all English is one of the official languages of Canada. Your comments very appreciated. Sam, I'm a Chinese from TW againts all discrimations.

africa is a big continent of over maybe 30some countries (not just cameroon).
do you expect out of so many nations that all africans speak bad english?

will your school hire africans from other african nations? or was the twice bitten lesson enough to simply discriminate against all people from africa, who apply to teach english at your "university."

my gut feeling tells me it's just a ready excuse to prevent hiring africans or african americans..."blacks" as termed by asians, from teaching the "queens" english to "non-black" asian people.

discrimination, bigotry, and corruption seem to be the keywords to describe the quality of such an industry.

english teaching is not my professional or real skill, though i was able to teach because of my so-called good clear english.

Re: DO YOU NEED QUALIFIED ENGLISH TEAC HERS? CONTACT ME

Hi Anne,

from korea. I don't know much about the Chinese edu system or what your schools req to hire English teachers. I've been running a school for 8 years now. The excuse I keep getting here for the continue raise on price of a working visa for English teachers. (Teaching Visas in Korea are pay by the school/employer) Our gov. says that, we are swamp by E. teachers without teaching visas, drunk, drugs, more...... Well, I'm not replying to you here to talk about that. I hope we have the chance over here to hire English teachers from other nationalities than the passports allowed right now. E.G. I applied last month to bring a Philipino-Canadian female teacher (U degree also from Canada). Application was rejected because she is only permanent resident of Canada. Of course I was very upset. After a long... month searching, our new teacher will arrive soon from Canada. I went through atleast 50 resumes and a dozen of interviews from esl teachers already in Korea and I did not like the choices. The more choices/nationalities the better. I could tell who I can trust and speaks English well for my students, my responsability as an owner.

best,

Karen S.

Re: DO YOU NEED QUALIFIED ENGLISH TEAC HERS? CONTACT ME

With all due respect, I'm a fourth year student in China and will be graduating in a week time. I'm not being critical but just stating the truth.
Our university previously engaged a Cameroonian teacher and his pronunciation is terribly horrific. Believe me, we could not understand his English and he is not as efficient as he is supposed to be. I wouldn't know what lies ahead for other Chinese students, if they were to get teachers like him. I know there are many good Cameroonian teachers but I have friends from other university having the same problems like mine.

Here are some examples of his pronunciation.

"Patient" pronounce as ="par sion"
"ready" pronounce as = "ra dy"
"Batteries" pronounce as "But terries".
"Cake" pronounce as "Gakes"
"Fairy" pronounce as "Farry"

Like I said, I'm not here to criticize. We have had British, Canadians, Singapore and Australians teachers before. They do speak Standard English, not much I can say for the Australian but he is still good.

In any case, good luck to you and your teachers. Anyway, our university has decided against hiring any more Africans. Once bitten twice shy.

DO YOU NEED QUALIFIED ENGLISH TEAC HERS? CONTACT ME

Hi all, this is just to tell the employers in Asia that not only teachers from Europe or lets say the white teachers that speak good English because they are called Native Speaking teachers. Chinese school authorities are forgeting that a good teacher is a good teacher no matter where you come from. Our skin color has nothing to play when it come to competence. I want to tell you that teachers from my Organization here in Cameroon have been teaching in many Chinese schools for several years now and these schools have been asking more to replace some of their white teachers because they cannot teach, they are lazy, the are not friendly even with their students, but our African teachers are doing all that the students and their bosses want. So I just want to tell the Chinese recruiters that they shouldn't look at where a teacher is coming from.

I have many other teachers to send to Chinese schools and I am in need of teaching positions, so if anybody who needs to recruit English teachers is here, he/she should get in touch with me and I will send you a qualified English teacher.

My number is: +237-7716288
E-mail: penjoka@yahoo.com

Thanks
