If all methods failed, just ask the kid HOW she wants to LEARN english. It's that's easy. Try it!

Hi, Tomiko:
Motivation is very important. As they said: "You can lead the horse to the water, but...". Most of the children who are indulged in playing games do not buy your teaching. Try not to teach first. Befriend with him or her first, then next....

Dear Kwako,
I going to speak to Alice's parents today. I'll show them your plan. I am the 5th teacher they hired for Alice. She has many video games in English but she does not like it. She is very smart and doesn't like teasing to learn English.

Wish me luck,

Tomiko

No more headache. 2 poktanju did the trick. What to do with a life so boring? After a couple of years, teaching sucks.

Anyway, keep up the great postings.

Tomiko. Re: Your student "Alice".

First:"Alice's Word List". Ask Alice to write down the words she knows in English. 5, 10...
Second: Ask Alice, "Tell me what you wrote!"
Third: If Alice wrote 10 words and she told you 6 of these words, them her average/score is 60%.
fourth: Challenge Alice to improve that average next time. The higher score, the better.

First month goal: "Alice's Word List" should have more than 100 words within one month. Alice's score should be 70% or higher.

Second month with "Alice's Word List": She will learn/memorize very short sentences.

That's it for now.

Re: Best way to learn English!

Tomiko,

There's your answer, English video games. My own kids are younger than 11, but they pick up English vocab very quickly from video games, much better than when I try and teach them.

Just be careful what games, my kids were fine with "Ready, Set, Go, Snakebite is in the lead, ... " from Monster Truck Madness, but "Attacking, with High kick death blow..." was not a good idea.

For an 11 year old some of the adventure games would be good, there is lots of dialogue.

Dear Kwako,
I'm trying to teach privately a 11-year old with a learning problem - she's really struggling with English. She likes to play video games. Any advice? I'm miserable.

Nobody can prevent you from saying what you do want to say. Anything you say is fine. Really.

Best way to learn English!

Best way to learn English! my way. Start off teaching yourself. Vizualize yourself speaking perfect English or anything you're learning. Try this at home. Your mind is far more powerful than any computer will ever be - it can run several different programs at the same time. Within a few weeks you should be able to dream in English. Can save you alot of potential headache, and lifetime commitment. Just a program/language.
