It is human nature to make
whatever we do
appear grand
and universities are no different
Yesterday's oral English classes
are now grandly titled
content-based instruction
although they are both
really about general knowledge topics
and not intellectual disciplines
The different forms of spoken English
dialogue speech discussion debate
and so on
are also old
What is new about the much publicized
university language reforms is
for the first time in the history of
higher education in Japan
advanced students
know no more about the content
than basic-level students
P.S. Give Education A Chance
When all we have to do
is to organize our students by way of
their intellectual disciplines and
teach it to them in English
