" Also the bonus for the foreign teacher is twice higher than the Chinese teachers" - Bonus? What bonus is there for foreign teachers? Do you mean airfare? Well, that's not the same as bonus.

"Most Chinese outside the big cities have to pay their own housing and
transportation to school" - I have worked at a umber of institutions and everywhere teachers were provided housing by the school/university.

"foreign teachers get a better deal and life than
Chinese teachers." - Looks can be deceptive. Most local teachers, especially at universities etc enjoy a standard of living at par, if not better, than foreign teachers. The exceptions, if any, are new recruits.

"Foreign teachers also have the option
> to teach privately and make good money, Chinese teachers no" - If anything, quite the opposite is true. The difference is that foreign teachers 'may' get a higher salary for extra hours, provided they find those jobs. You must accept that foreign teachers' grasp of the language is mostly much better and it's only fair that they get a premium for their knowledge and experience.

In passing, I must praise the one who started this thread, Chineseteacher while reserve comment on this....

Yes, you are right. New Chinese teachers like me make about 1500-2000. I make 2000rmb per month plus another 15rmb per lesson x12= 180rmb per week. On top of that I get another 150rmb per month as a Head Teacher.

My school provide share (2person) housing, free water and electricity. I don't think foreign teachers are allowed to teach outside. But for us Chinese teacher, it is fine. I teach part-time in a language school and is getting 40rmb x 6 lessons every sunday.

I don't teach in a big city, but in Jiaozou, Henan. I saddened that people keep saying that 400rmb is enough to survive a month, but I do agree if it is for the local. We can't expect foreigners to spend 1.5rmb on dumplings and a cup of soya bean milk, like us Chinese. We go to the market and we don't get ripped off, but laowai do. lol

SEZ WHO, TOUGH MONKEY??? If, according to you, foreign teachers generally had it so good in the PRC, WHY the hell is there such a massive movement back to mom and apple pie before the ink on the ?!@k+n% contract has even had time to dry?! Answer: because foreign instructors, by their acceptance of everything in good faith, so easily fall prey to the mendacity of those Chinese schools and agencies who don't really give a hoot about anything but "reaching their quota" ... even at the risk of their reputation and the ESL teacher's already sparse pocketbook! BULL, Babe! Your post is chuck full of the usual fantasized propaganda that has sent me and so many of my overtrusting colleagues straight to the #!c^&*g poor house!!! Develop an original line, or shut the hell up!

New Chinese teachers make around 1,500 to 2,000 yuan. Some teachers in the big cities make more because the higher price of living. Most Chinese outside the big cities have to pay their own housing and transportation to school. Foreign teachers no, they have their housing paid by the school. Also the bonus for the foreign teacher is twice higher than the Chinese teachers. For the hrs. Chinese teachers teach more hrs, and they can be fire anytime as there are 100's of new applicants waiting for the position. The fact that Chinese teachers sometimes have to keep a family, makes their job so important, often they have to accept to be slaves and take all kind of abuse. On the other hand, foreign teachers quit the job when there are cheated-abused by schools. Foreign teachers also have the option to teach privately and make good money, Chinese teachers no. There is not comparison, foreign teachers get a better deal and life than Chinese teachers.

Re: Foreign Teachers

Dear Chinese Teacher,

I join my colleague, Jack Kanoi, in lauding your forthrightness in condemning the mendacious statements made to potential EFL recruits by so many schools and agencies in China. Rather than propagandizing the fiction which inevitably empties so many teachers' pockets, wouldn't it be better for all concerned if the nefarious culprits involved were to deploy the same amount of energy in seeking out a more positive, aboveboard solution to the question of a (foreign) guest instructor's survival in the PRC? Gadzooks! I hope something (ANYTHING!) effective can be done quickly to resolve this annoying issue.

Peace,
Ellis

Hi Chineseteacher,

Amazing! Your honesty and candour, I mean.

Best wishes,
Jack

Foreign Teachers

I do feel sorry for most foreign teachers engaged by schools in China. Most recruiters and schools keep lying about the salary offered to foreign teachers. Most claim that we chinese teachers are paid less than foreign teachers, which is actually not true.

I've been teaching for 2 years now and my salary is more if not on par with 2 the foreign teachers in my school. My salary, including bonus and incentives is around 2800-3000rmb/month for 12 lesson a week. The two foreign teacher are being paid 3000 and getting 18 lessons.

Some of my older collegues are even getting more. One way for you people to find out is to look at teachers who smoke. A collegue of my told the Foreign teachers that he is only getting 1500, Rubbish. He smoke 2 packets of cigarettes a day, costing about 30rmb and that will cost him 900rmb. How could he live with 600 and month,. He has a wife , 2 children and has to feed his parents, too. What I hear is that he is getting 3600rmb.He has a motorbike and his wife has a motorised bicycle.
