Marriage is a societal requirement, I am fairly certain that if it wasn't for the family pressure most Chinese would not get married. Look at South-Korea, Japan, Taiwan, ... these are less traditional societies and culturally close to Mainland China, the marriage rate is in free fall, young people date, love each other but don't get married. Also in these countries women are not running after money and local men have a lot more to offer than a bank account. Japanese women were once know for their greediness but young women in Japan nowadays don't really give a damn about how much you earn, they expect a caring man instead. Ultimately China will change too, it might take another 20 or 30 years though.
