In response to Re Murder at (The) Oriental (Former FT in China)
You are both wrong.
'At sea' is an idiom. Idiomatic usage, identified by hyphens or quotes, is not adapted to accommodate agreement in tense, gender or plurality.
Teachers of English should not be 'at sea' when discussing grammar.
