Internship Nepal - 2006-12-15

Teaching English at School/Monastery

Teaching English is a fun, rewarding, and worthwhile experience. Volunteers in this program will teach English at either a Nepali public or private school, depending on demands at the time of the person's volunteer work. Most of the time, volunteers in teaching projects work as instructors. These Nepal volunteers are more than welcome to participate in other school activities, such as sports or sanitation programs, while they work at the school. A volunteer usually teaches two to three hours a day, for six days a week. For the most part, the children range from 6 to 13 years old. Internship Nepal arranges placement in locations like the Capital City of Kathmandu and surrounding towns or villages throughout the year.
The host organization assists volunteers with their teaching methods, advises volunteers with solutions to communication barriers (both with students and colleagues), and gives volunteers curriculums to follow. Also, it is not necessary that you come from an English- speaking country in order to become a teaching volunteer. We welcome any volunteers that have a working knowledge of English, as well as the desire to share their knowledge with students who are eager to learn.
Career prospects in Nepal often rely on English, and by teaching it, you become an important part of the community. Based in Kathmandu, you can either teach in non-profit schools or a Buddhist Monastery!

Non-profit schools often have limited resources - inviting you to teach creatively. The children are both dedicated and respectful, and with your lessons planned you will be free to teach. Fridays are for games, or enjoying a day to yourself.

For those looking for a more cultural immersion, take a unique opportunity to teach Buddhist monks in a monastery. As well as working on their English, you may also be leading games activities. Female volunteers will also be accepted to teach at the monasteries.

Teaching is not available in October due to the number of festivals interrupting the school schedule. An alternative placement can be arranged for this time in another program. This is dictated by the lunar calendar. Therefore if you are volunteering for month or less, we do not recommend starting your placement at this time of year. For those volunteering for a longer period of time, the festival does provide a great opportunity to interact with the local culture.

Nepal is one of the most beautiful mountainous countries in the world and this volunteer teaching English project is an excellent opportunity to work and travel the home of Mount Everest. Volunteering as an English teaching assistant, you will work with underprivileged children and help to give them opportunities that they may not have had before, making this an extremely rewarding volunteer experience.
You should consider this volunteer program for your gap year or career break if you are interested in having a real cultural experience of Nepal and wish to work as a teaching English assistant in different Nepali towns or villages.
