I think the main point to be made here is that grammar represents the working tools of a language.

By learning how a language works we gain independence from set phrases and standard sentences. We can finally speak our mind using our own words, because we have learnt how to string them together effectively. The greater our understanding of the workings of a language (be it our Mother Tongue or a foreign language) the larger the potential to express ourselves fully and articulately.
