In response to a few questions - Teachers Discussion (Micah)

Micah, never assume that just because you have a teaching degree,or years of teaching experience, that you will be treated better,or paid more than an inexpereinced teacher when you arrive in China. It is nothing like the United States, or my country, Australia. I worked with an American teacher in Wuhan, who had 10 years teaching experience in China,Korea and Taiwan(plus teachers degree)and the school treated him like shit. Many schools will employ foreigners as long as they fit the Western physical appearance stereotype:eg,young, blonde, blue eyes 22-27 years old etc. If you are young and pretty
and Western, than you are a valuable marketing tool for most schools, training centres,or whatever they may call themselves.

The TESL or TEFL industry in China is motivated by the maximization of profit.Sadly, the quality of education, and proper treatment of students and teachers,is usually way down the list of priorities(or non-existent)If you come to China you will meet some great people, and have good experiences. You will also meet people(both Chinese and Western)who are incredibly arrogant, superficial and downright dishonet.Don,t come to China with any preconcieved idea of what it will be, or should be like.
