Taking a medical everytime you accept a job was always the norm when I was there in China teaching. My medical done here in Canada was not looked at as I had to get on done again after I arrived in country and one was done everytime I accepted a new job. You were lucky Relative Newbie that you were not made to do one every time you took a new job. I look forward to having to do one this summer there in China as I hope toreturn then to take up teaching again there.
