I was hoping to get some feedback from people who are obviously interested or knowledgeable - but I see I should have gone about it from the other direction... You live and learn. :)

You're quite right about the location of Ceske Budejovice, but as I'm sure you can imagine, most places change in 20 years, and post-communist countries in development even more so. Not to say it's now a thriving metropolis - it's still a provincial town - but it all comes down to what you want. I'm very happy living here (after having experienced cities like Oslo and London, and villages like Rojales in Alicante) - for me at least it has a perfect mix of walkable town with cosiness.
