In the name of progress is the official line for all imperialists inc. of course the British. Using Kenya again as an example the British wanted to build a railroad from Kampala (Uganda) to Mombasa on the coast through the area of Kenya I lived which is inhabited by the Nandi tribe. The leader of the Nandi tribe at that time was said to have powers with which he could see the future and had foretold of a great snake (the railroad) that would divide their lands and therefore he violently opposed the British until such time that the British invited him to peace talks and promptly murdered him.
