Chris Pattern deserves applause for introducing democratic reforms to HK in the 1990's.

Although I don't like the old boys network he belongs to, and the politics he stands for, he did come across as a more accessible leader and would be seen going out to eat with locals, taking strolls, and even adopted a cantonese nickname IIRC. Of course, any good he did, is not noticeable now. Although under his leadership the airport was finished, much the annoyance of Beijing, which ensured HK's future as a cargo and tourism and trading hub....I'm sure the mainlanders would have liked to have seen Shanghai or Shenzhen get an airport like that, and push HK into second place.
