Well, I don't know about using a chinese vpn I used one based out of the Bahamas or the USA when I was in China, with worldwide servers to choose from through the app. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable using a chinese vpn, given the amount of backdoor and malware type stuff, but interesting to hear nonetheless.
