Japan may have made some pretty terrible mistakes during World War 2, but can you really tell me of any developed country that has no reason to feel guilty about their past at all? The British brought some great things to the world war with their empire, but the stories of abuse, slavery and other crimes is pretty much endless. As for the U.S.A, even their natives accept the behaviour of their government (in regards to foreign policy) is not quite right these days..
Besides most Japanese people that I will ever speak to, don't even have parents that were born during World War 2. It is no use giving them a hard time about it, I'd rather forgive and move on.
Not to mention that most Chinese seem to have somehow magically forgiven the Germans, but not the Japanese. I've even had some students express their admiration of Adolf Hitler in front of me. I usually advise them not to say that out loud if they ever visit Europe. Can't deny that he was an effective public speaker and that particular lesson was about public speaking, so I set myself up for that one. It was pretty damn awkward, lol.
