Visiting India: Tips for Women

If you are a woman planning a trip to India, there are special factors to take into consideration. Visiting India can be a great experience. However, you're sure to enjoy your trip even more if you take the time to become accustomed with what you'll find there prior to your visit. Here are some traveling tips especially designed for women that can help make your trip enjoyable, convenient and safe.

What Should You Pack?

If you're used to packing a lot of clothing options when traveling, you might want to change your methodology when it comes to visiting India. Of course, you'll definitely want to take along one or more pairs of your favorite sandals, as well as your most comfortable walking shoes. You'll also want to bring cool, comfortable underwear and bras - cotton or fabrics designed to wick moisture away from the body are good choices. A one-piece swimsuit should also be in your suitcase. Other than these essentials, many women traveling to India find it's more convenient and comfortable to simply purchase clothing items locally instead of packing them. The weather is hot in India, and you likely won't be very comfortable - or modest - in your normal summer wardrobe. Instead, plan on purchasing the traditional three-piece cotton outfit that women normally wear in India. Your outfit will consist of a tunic worn over pants, along with a long scarf. You'll be able to find these outfits inexpensively, and they are extremely comfortable and modest to wear. When wearing other outfits, be sure to always bring a long scarf along with you, as it's required in many situations for the sake of modesty.

Always Bring the Essentials with You

Before setting out for the day in India, it's a good idea to make sure you're bringing a few essential items with you. Your cell phone is an absolute must, along with some hand disinfectant and a pack of tissues. If you have an iPod or MP3 player, this can also be a handy device to take along with you. If vendors are becoming a bit too insistent at the bazaar, you can always just pretend to be on the phone. You can also use the music from your iPod or MP3 player to drown out the sound of overly aggressive vendors.

Enjoy Shopping in India

When traveling to India, you'll want to be sure to take advantage of the great shopping opportunities. Shopping in India can be a lot of fun, even if you're not particularly accustomed to their standard methods of doing business. A day spent at the bazaar can be a fun and memorable one. However, if the chaotic atmosphere of the Delhi bazaar is just a bit too much for you, check out the shopping scene in Khan Market. Here you'll find a calmer atmosphere and a more diplomatic shopping crowd that might be more to your liking.

Where to Stay

You'll find a myriad of options when it comes to accommodations in India. However, especially if you are a woman traveling the country alone, it's important to focus on safe options. Do your research before you travel, and you're sure to find great accommodations.
