By:steily william

A city known for its monumental wonders, a city housing UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a conurbation known for handicrafts and fine arts – that’s Agra. Located at Uttar Pradesh in India, this city attracts lakhs of tourists every year from across the country and the world. And there is one name associated about Agra, viz, the Taj Mahal. There is hardly any literate soul in the world who doesn’t know about Agra.

Agra carries a rich legacy of the past; it finds mention in the epic ‘Mahabharata’ and the city was called Agrevana, which means the ‘border of the forest’. As per available records, Raja Badal Singh founded the city around 1495 AD. And it was Sultan Sikandar Lodi who turned Agra as his capital from the Delhi base in the year 1506. With the city falling in the hands of Mughal rule, a number of monuments were erected; worth mentioning are Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, and Agra fort - all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can explore more about Agra once you visit the city.

There are a number of restaurants in Agra that are the tourists’ delight. Differing mouth watering delicacies are served in the restaurants located at the lanes leading to the monuments as well as those situated in-house in big accommodation hotels. There are also restaurants in Agra that serve various Indian foods including continental food.

Agra is fast catching up with the nightlife phenomenon. Nightlife in Agra is given impetus by the nightclubs, bars and pubs located in the city. Downtown Club Bar, Mughal Bar, Le Bar and Downing Street Bar, are the major centres where nightlife in Agra exhibits its true colors.

Shopping in Agra is another attraction for tourists. Agra is famous for marblework; you can find tiny replicas of the Taj Mahal itself in marble! Then leatherwork exhibited in belts, shoes, and bags, brassware, brass artifacts, carpets and rugs, etc. are also bought by many tourists. The most visited areas for shopping in Agra include those near the Taj Mahal, U.P State Emporium, Shilpagram crafts village, U.P Handlooms and UPICA at M.G. Road.
