The Karenni Social Development Center (KSDC) is a Community Based Organization established in 2002 by refugees and graduates of the EarthRights School Burma. It is based on the Thai-Myanmar border near Mae Hong Son, Thailand. The vision of the Social Development Center is to improve the lives of the Karenni people who have suffered human rights abuses. KSDC trains and educates future activists, advocates, and young people who will go on to be leaders in and improve the capacity of their community. The organization aims to promote non-violent social change in an effort to build a new society, develop the rule of law, and educate the community about the protection and preservation of the environment.

We are looking for a qualified individual to support our program and teach English on our Basic Course. The KSDC Basic Course is a 10 month training program for Karenni youth from the refugee camp who are interested in human rights, rule of law, democracy and environment. Participants study a range of social science and human rights subjects in Burmese and Karenni, and at the same time improve their English and computer skills. The position is unpaid but offers valuable experience in a friendly and flexible atmosphere. The volunteer will get a private room and workspace with an internet connection, and three meals a day prepared by the students.

Main Responsibilities

• Teaching a group of 25 students pre-intermediate level English

• Preparing lesson plans that will allow students to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills

• Working with coordinator to develop and organize the curriculum

• Assisting with administrative duties (photocopying, printing, filing etc.) as and when necessary

Qualifications and Attributes

• University level educated. Undergraduate or Masters
• TEFL Certification would be ideal, but experience is preferred
• Keen interest in refugee issues, international politics, human rights law etc.
• We require a tremendous amount of responsibility and dedication, as well as sensitivity to the cultural and political context in which the organization is situated
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
• Strong intercultural communication skills, verbal and written
• Ability to manage own time
• Patience, curiosity and willingness to engage in the KSDC community and the wider local community
• Minimum 3 month commitment
