International ESL Jobs

Hebron, West Bank, Palestine
By:La Casa Learning Center <Lacasalearningcenter@gmail.com>
Date: 7 August 2014

We work with some of the most at-risk youth in the West Bank, offering them an opportunity to improve their life chances through education. As well as teaching English, we instruct our students in critical thinking and personal development. We aim to achieve a diverse cultural exchange and social dialogue through our international programs by hosting people from around the world. The diverse perspectives will enrich the activities and programs at La Casa. You will see true Palestinian life and be introduced to new points of view. Our programs promise a positive and enriching experience.

We encourage our volunteers to experience all dimensions of Palestinian and Hebron culture during their time with the organization. We arrange cultural activities for our volunteers throughout the year. Activities can include a tour of the old city and other historical sites around the city.

It is expected that you will work approximately 30 hours per week. Your work life will consist of the following activities:
- Educational activities such as organizing weekly workshop for the Palestinian community on different subjects e.g. culture differences, how to write resumes, how to write formal emails
- Teaching English at the Center, and helping other teachers in preparing classes or events
- Administrative activities such as helping La Casa center staff and interns in writing reports, making schedules, printing materials for the classes etc
- Helping La Casa staff in building and strengthening community and international relations
- Organizing fun and entertaining activities for La Casa students

Our youth are very informed, politically active and well versed in using social media. They will never pass up a chance to talk to you and invite foreigners to their homes. Hebron also features different organizations with young local volunteers who are actively participating in shaping their society. From poetry nights to hanging out in nearby recreation parks in the evening or just meeting friends in restaurants and cafes - Khalil offers a variety of aspects on city-life.

All volunteers/interns are provided housing with a local Palestinian host family (if desired). For many participants of years past, the most rewarding part of any program at La Casa is living with a Palestinian host family. Whether you practice Arabic with a host sibling or help prepare traditional Palestinian food, you will probably learn more in the living room than in the classroom. La Casa Learning Center has a wide range of contacts among Palestinian families living in Herbon, Halhul and Dura. Additionally, we have contacts with families in a nearby refugee camp in the Hebron area (Al Fawwar). If you prefer to live in a refugee camp, please state this in your cover letter. Host families provide all of their guests with a place to sleep, dinner and, when possible or appropriate, access to laundry services. Anyone who has special needs or request in relation to their home-stays should contact us about it least two months before their departure date.

Requirements:
Teaching experience is preferable but not necessary. Instead, we look for university students or graduates who are adept at living in a conservative city, who can demonstrate creativity and dynamism both inside and outside the classroom, and who are willing to go the extra mile to make their teaching site unique and successful.
We do work hard at La Casa and applicants should be ready to apply themselves fully to their volunteer positions as do the other international volunteers. That said, there is time at evenings and weekends to relax, experience Palestine and visit nearby cities such as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho and Ramallah.

The program usually runs from 2-12 weeks but is not limited to 12 weeks, volunteers are more than welcome to stay and volunteer for longer.

There is a nominal fee associated with the program which covers administrative costs, housing and some meals. Arabic courses are also available. If you are interested in taking Arabic courses, please indicate this in your cover letter.

Length of Stay: 2 weeks - 6 months

Please e-mail your resume/CV to: LaCasaLearningCenter@gmail.com and reference the program title in the subject line.
